Angel Reese grabbed a WNBA-record 26 rebounds and added 11 points as the Atlanta Dream defeated the Los Angeles Sparks 78-71 on Monday night at Crypto.com Arena. Allisha Gray scored 20 points, Rhyne Howard had 18 and Naz Hillmon added 12 for Atlanta, while Nneka Ogwumike led Los Angeles with a season-high 27 points and 16 rebounds. Cameron Brink and Dearica Hamby each scored 15 for the Sparks.
Reese broke Chamique Holdsclaw’s previous single-game rebounding mark of 24, set in 2003. She also surpassed A’ja Wilson’s WNBA single-season record of 451 rebounds, now with 458 for the season. The Dream led 37-36 at halftime before Gray helped Atlanta take control in the third quarter, and the Dream opened a 66-55 lead with 9:05 remaining. Atlanta improved to 25-13 and completed a 4-0 West Coast road trip.
The loss dropped Los Angeles to 13-25 and marked its seventh defeat in eight games. The Sparks were without Rae Burrell, their third-leading scorer, because of an illness. Atlanta also completed a three-game season sweep of Los Angeles.
The Dream return home Friday, Aug. 28, to face the Portland Fire at Gateway Center Arena at College Park before hosting the Minnesota Lynx on Aug. 30. The Sparks will host the Washington Mystics on Friday, Aug. 28, before traveling to Seattle to face the Storm on Aug. 30.
