Argentina Rallies Late to Beat England Advance to World Cup Final Against Spain

Argentina scored twice in the closing minutes to defeat England 2-1 in Wednesday's FIFA World Cup semifinal in Atlanta, booking a place in the 2026 World Cup final. England took the lead in the 55th minute through Anthony Gordon, but Enzo Fernández equalized in the 85th before substitute Lautaro Martínez headed home Lionel Messi's cross in stoppage time to complete the comeback. Messi finished with the decisive assist as the defending champions advanced to a second straight World Cup final.

England appeared in control after Gordon's opener, but Argentina dominated possession and territory over the closing stages. Fernández's long range strike shifted the momentum before Martínez delivered the winner in added time. The defeat ended England's tournament one match short of the final despite another deep run under Thomas Tuchel.

Argentina will face Spain in the FIFA World Cup final on Sunday at New York New Jersey Stadium. England will play France in the third place match on Saturday in Miami as both teams conclude their 2026 World Cup campaigns.
