Egypt Makes World Cup History, Eliminate Australia on Penalties to Reach Round of 16

Egypt earned the nation's first FIFA World Cup knockout stage victory Friday, defeating Australia 4-2 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw through extra time in Arlington, Texas. Emam Ashour gave Egypt the lead with a 13th minute header before Australia equalized in the 55th minute on a Mohamed Hany own goal. Egypt converted all four of its penalties, with Mahmoud Saber, Ramy Rabia, Mohamed Salah and Hossam Abdelmaguid scoring, while Australia missed twice to end the shootout.

Australia nearly struck first when Cristian Volpato hit the crossbar early, but Egypt controlled much of the match and created the better chances. Goalkeeper Patrick Beach kept the Socceroos alive with several key saves, including a late stop on Ramy Rabia's header, before Australia substituted Mathew Ryan for the shootout. The move did not pay off as Egypt remained perfect from the spot to secure a landmark result.

"It's history," Egypt captain Mohamed Salah said after the match. "I told the boys before the game, 'Guys, this is the biggest stage you could play in your life, so just enjoy it. Don't let the pressure get into you.' I'm glad that we managed to win the game. I'm happy that we wrote history today."

Egypt advances to the Round of 16 and will face defending champion Argentina on Tuesday in Atlanta after Argentina's 3-2 extra time victory over Cape Verde. Australia's tournament ends after falling one win short of reaching the World Cup Round of 16.
