Gabby Williams Leads Valkyries to Historic WNBA Finals Berth: Golden State Sweeps Defending Champion Aces

The Golden State Valkyries are headed to the WNBA Finals for the first time in franchise history after defeating the defending champion Las Vegas Aces 87-77 in overtime Friday night. Golden State completed a 3-0 sweep of the semifinal series, becoming the first expansion team in WNBA history to reach the Finals in its second season. Kayla Thornton led the Valkyries with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Gabby Williams delivered 16 points, including eight in overtime, to help finish off the series on the road.

Williams came through when the game was on the line. After Golden State erased a six-point deficit late in regulation, she made a clutch step-back midrange jumper with 54.7 seconds remaining in overtime, helping put the Aces away. The Valkyries outscored Las Vegas 16-6 in the extra period and went a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line. Kiah Stokes added 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Tiffany Hayes also scored 11.

After the historic win, Williams emphasized the belief and unity that carried Golden State through the postseason. “All we need is each other. We just need to believe in each other,” Williams said. She acknowledged that the Valkyries were not widely viewed as a team destined for this stage, crediting the group’s culture and daily commitment for helping them prove they belonged. “We felt that we had something worth fighting for,” she said, explaining that the team plans to carry that same togetherness into the Finals.

The Valkyries also overcame a strong performance from A’ja Wilson, who finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds despite shooting 6-for-19 from the field. Golden State’s defense sparked a pivotal 17-0 run in the third quarter, and the team stayed composed when the Aces threatened to extend the series. Now, the Valkyries will host the Atlanta Dream in a Finals matchup between two franchises seeking their first WNBA championship. Game 1 is scheduled for October 17 at Chase Center.
