Fernando Mendoza Wins 2025 Heisman Trophy After Historic Season for Indiana
Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza captured the 2025 Heisman Trophy, becoming the first player in program history to earn college football’s most prestigious honor. Mendoza received 2,362 points, including 643 first-place votes, leading a landslide victory over fellow finalists Vanderbilt’s Diego Pavia, Notre Dame’s Jeremiyah Love and Ohio State’s Julian Sayin. He topped all six Heisman voting regions and appeared on 95.16% of ballots, tying Marcus Mariota (2014) for the second-highest ballot percentage in award history and achieving the seventh-highest share of possible points ever recorded.
Mendoza’s win capped an undefeated 13-0 season for the Hoosiers and secured Indiana’s No. 1 seed in the College Football Playoff.

On the field, Mendoza delivered one of the most efficient seasons in the country, completing 71.5% of his passes for 2,980 yards while leading the nation with 33 touchdown passes against just six interceptions. He also contributed 240 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns, finishing second nationally in total touchdowns accounted for (39) and in quarterback rating (181.4). His leadership guided Indiana to its first Big Ten Championship in decades and signature wins over top-ranked opponents, fueling a season that exceeded expectations and solidified Mendoza’s place among the elite players in college football.
