The Detroit Lions opened the season with a 31-30 overtime victory over the New Orleans Saints. The Saints overcame a 21-point lead before Amon-Ra St. Brown's 4-yard touchdown reception from Jared Goff gave Detroit the lead in overtime. Gibbs rushed for 156 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries, while Goff threw for 206 yards and two touchdowns. New Orleans quarterback Tyler Shough threw for 410 yards and three touchdowns, with Chris Olave catching 10 passes for 182 yards.
Detroit jumped ahead 21-0 before New Orleans mounted its comeback behind Shough and Olave. The Saints eventually tied the game at 24 on a 9-yard touchdown pass to Juwan Johnson with 1:07 remaining in regulation. Detroit regained the lead in overtime, but New Orleans answered with a touchdown before failing to convert its two-point attempt, allowing the Lions to escape with the victory.
Gibbs provided Detroit's biggest offensive performance of the afternoon, accounting for 156 of the Lions' rushing yards and finding the end zone twice. St. Brown finished the game with the decisive touchdown in overtime as Detroit held on after surrendering its early advantage.
Detroit travels to Buffalo for a Thursday night matchup with the Bills on Sept. 17. New Orleans heads to Baltimore to face the Ravens on Sept. 20.
