Erling Haaland Late Winner Sends Norway Past Ivory Coast Into World Cup Round of 16
Norway advanced to the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 with a 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast on Tuesday in Dallas. Antonio Nusa opened the scoring in the 39th minute before Amad Diallo leveled for Ivory Coast in the 74th. Erling Haaland delivered the decisive goal in the 86th minute, sealing Norway's first World Cup knockout stage victory.
Ivory Coast controlled long stretches of possession after halftime and found an equalizer through Diallo's individual effort, but Norway responded late. Patrick Berg's low delivery found Haaland in front of goal, and the striker finished from close range to continue his outstanding tournament. The result sent Norway into the last 16 while ending Ivory Coast's deepest World Cup run in its first knockout appearance.
Ivory Coast coach Emerse Faé said his young squad paid for a lack of experience after drawing level late in the match. "We lacked maturity," Faé said, adding that his team needed to be "more pragmatic" against opponents capable of capitalizing on small defensive mistakes.
Norway will face Brazil in the Round of 16 on Sunday in East Rutherford, New Jersey, with a place in the quarterfinals at stake. Ivory Coast's tournament ends after reaching the knockout stage for the first time in the nation's World Cup history.
