SMU Stuns No. 10 Miami in Overtime Thriller, Extends Lashlee’s Contract and Winning Streak
DALLAS — SMU celebrated one of its biggest football wins in decades Saturday, defeating No. 10 Miami in overtime before a sellout crowd of 35,074 at Ford Stadium. The 31-24 victory marked the Mustangs’ highest-ranked win at home in program history and their first over a top-10 opponent since upsetting No. 6 Pitt in the 1983 Cotton Bowl.

The dramatic finish came when SMU’s Ahmaad Moses intercepted a Miami pass in overtime, setting up a 1-yard touchdown run by TJ Harden to seal the victory. The Mustangs improved to 12-1 in ACC play since joining the conference in 2024 and extended their home conference winning streak to a program-record 13 games, remaining a perfect 7-0 at home in ACC matchups.
Before kickoff, SMU announced a two-year contract extension for head coach Rhett Lashlee, whose leadership has elevated the program to new heights. Former U.S. President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush (SMU ’68) performed the game’s coin toss, while actor Christopher McDonald—best known as “Shooter McGavin” from Happy Gilmore—served as the game’s celebrity guest.
The sold-out crowd was SMU’s fourth-largest ever at Ford Stadium, continuing a strong trend of fan support: the Mustangs have sold out six of their last nine home games, including five of seven ACC contests.
Next up, SMU travels to Chestnut Hill to face Boston College on Saturday, November 8, with kickoff set for 12 p.m. ET on the ACC Network.
