No. 17 SMU dominated UC Davis 56-10 Saturday at Gerald J. Ford Stadium as Kevin Jennings threw for 337 yards and a career-high five touchdowns in only one half of action. Derrick McFall had a 52-yard touchdown catch, while Theo Melin Ohrstrom added two touchdown receptions for the Mustangs. UC Davis quarterback Jackson Kollock completed 8 of 10 passes for 88 yards and a touchdown, with Coby Herman catching the score.
SMU took control immediately and led 42-0 at halftime, outgaining the Aggies 372-121 before the teams agreed to play 12-minute quarters in the second half because of the 100-degree heat and 107-degree heat index. The Mustangs finished with 547 total yards and scored touchdowns on eight of their nine trips to the red zone. Jennings was 14 of 16 without an interception.
The performance also moved Jennings into the top spot on SMU’s career total offense list. He finished with 9,073 career total yards, passing Ben Hicks’ previous school record of 8,977. Jennings now has 63 career touchdown passes and 767 passing yards through SMU’s first two games this season.
SMU improved to 2-0 and will travel to No. 24 Louisville on Sept. 19 for a 2:30 p.m. CT kickoff on ESPN2. UC Davis fell to 2-1 and will return home the same day to host Stetson at 7 p.m. PT.
